Five federally recognized Tribes and one Indian community

There are five federally recognized Tribes and one Indian community located at least partially in North Dakota. The five tribes are the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation, the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, and the Yankton Sioux Tribe. The Indian community is the Spirit Lake Tribe.

Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara Nation

The Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation is a federally recognized tribe located in west-central North Dakota. The tribe is composed of three distinct tribes that have lived together for centuries: the Mandan, the Hidatsa, and the Arikara. The tribe's reservation is located on the Missouri River, near the towns of Stanton and New Town. The tribe's population is approximately 9,000.

Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate

The Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate is a federally recognized tribe located in northeastern South Dakota and southeastern North Dakota. The tribe is composed of two bands, the Sisseton and the Wahpeton. The tribe's reservation is located on the James River, near the town of Agency Village. The tribe's population is approximately 12,000.

Standing Rock Sioux Tribe

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is a federally recognized tribe located in western South Dakota and southwestern North Dakota. The tribe is composed of two bands, the Hunkpapa and the Blackfeet. The tribe's reservation is located on the Missouri River, near the town of Fort Yates. The tribe's population is approximately 15,000.

Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians

The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians is a federally recognized tribe located in north-central North Dakota. The tribe is composed of two bands, the Pembina and the Turtle Mountain. The tribe's reservation is located on the Turtle Mountains, near the town of Belcourt. The tribe's population is approximately 10,000.

Yankton Sioux Tribe

The Yankton Sioux Tribe is a federally recognized tribe located in southeastern South Dakota and southeastern North Dakota. The tribe is composed of two bands, the Yankton and the Dakota. The tribe's reservation is located on the Missouri River, near the town of Wagner. The tribe's population is approximately 8,000.
