The castle served as the residence of three-time Voivode of Wallachia, Vlad the Impaler, during the 15th century.

Under Vlad's reign, Poenari Castle gained notoriety as a symbol of his harsh and unforgiving rule. Legend has it that he ordered the impalement of thousands of prisoners on stakes surrounding the castle, earning him the moniker "Vlad the Impaler." Despite its grim history, Poenari Castle also served as a cultural center, with Vlad establishing a printing press within its walls.

Through the centuries, Poenari Castle fell into disrepair and was abandoned. However, in the 19th century, it was partially restored and became a popular tourist destination. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of this historical marvel, uncovering the secrets of its past while marveling at the surrounding natural beauty of the Carpathian Mountains.
